Cheap Chicken Coops

Chickens make fantastic pets, they are user friendly, funny and are super easy to care for for, even the kids can help out!

If you do want to raise chickens for your family, then the first thing that you will be after are some cheap chicken coops.

Unfortunately finding cheap chicken coops that are also good quality, efficient and that meet all the needs of the users is not as easy as getting your hands on a cheap dog house or a bird cage. But then, chooks aren’t your usual pet either.

So, where to find cheap chicken coops?
Well, you can search online, in your local newspaper or rural times to see if anyone is giving any chicken coops away… but these are usually massive, not very portable and in some state of disrepair. They can also be very expensive to buy new.

So, what do you do?

How about you build one?

Seriously, if you can use a hammer and a tape measure, if you can count to 100 and have a good set of plans then building your own cheap chicken coops is not only easy, but it is a fun and relatively safe activity that you can do with the kids to get the whole family involved. (You can also put as much personality as you like into your new chicken coop – honestly, they won’t mind if they have rainbows and roosters on the side of their coop but the kids will love it!)

This might seem a pretty scary concept to any of you who aren’t very experienced at building or doing DIY projects. But fear not! There are so many great plans for cheap chicken coops, many designs and ideas are even available online for free, or for a small charge that you can follow and create your own.

Most cheap chicken coops that you will build yourself will be made from a basic wooden frame. This is where it it really important to choose your wood wisely as the type of wood that you use will determine how long your chicken coops will last.

Don’t panic though!

This doesn’t mean that you need to get the most expensive timber. It is OK to use off cuts or used timber. Quite often you can get this from local carpenters or hardware stores for next to nothing. Just make sure that the type of wood you are using is good quality and is resistant to moisture.

Speaking of timber, there is one other thing that you need to think about. Timber can be really heavy. With this in mind, you also want to make sure that it’s not too heavy. This is supposed to be an enjoyable pastime and one of the greatest killjoys of raising chickens is having to move chicken coops that are just too heavy!

Getting your hands on a set of chicken coop plans is a great way to take stress out of this project for beginners.
You don’t need to be a skilled carpenter; you just need to follow step by step instructions.

Another option that may appeal when building chicken coops cheaply is to get a chicken coop kit, this should come with all of the materials pre-cut and measured so you can assemble it at home yourself. Keep in mind that although this is cheaper than buying new, it isn’t as cheap an option as working off a plan.

Whether using a good plan or a kit as a guide, it is easy to make cheap chicken coops yourself at home with your family.

So take a deep breath, and see what you can create!
