And as for actually getting in there and cleaning it out eeoooww!

I don’t care how great those fresh eggs taste, some things are just not worth it!

Of course the best way to deal with this is to prevent it happening in the first place right?
Here are a couple of tips for those that are about to build a chicken coop.

Make sure that;
  • your site drains freely,
  • is on a high point of your property – not in a natural sump hole,
  • that there are gutters and downpipes fixed to all roof lines – yes even the smallest hutch needs proper drainage!
  • that the flow from the downpipes goes away from the hen house and land immediately adjacent,
  • that the rain can’t get into your run, this can be prevented by a sheet of canvas over the netting, some plywood. Even shade cloth can stop a fair amount of moisture getting in!

If you do need to build a chicken coop in a bit of a dip, then dig a drain to divert the run off water away.
